Spiritual Cause of Gum & Dental Problems
In my work as a therapist, I look for the root cause of health or emotional challenges, and using my own unique healing methods, I help people all over the world, via a Zoom call, gain better health and well-being. In this article, I will be writing about the metaphysical or spiritual cause of gum and dental problems.
There are quite a few spiritual causes of gum and dental problems, and in this article, I will share a few in the hope that this will help you better understand the relation between unresolved negative emotions and the health of your gums and teeth. We were given an amazing dental set for biting and chewing, which can represent a built-in aggressive expression of having to look after ourselves; “getting our teeth into things”, baring our teeth, and a willingness to stand up and fight.
When suppressed dental problems can result in a feeling of overwhelm, feeling compelled to take responsibility and “biting off more than one can chew.”
The metaphysics of chronic dental problems can also reflect probable unresolved issues which may have spanned many lifetimes. In my work as a Soul Whisperer, I am also able to help you clear echoes of trapped emotions from past lifetimes.
The Spiritual Cause of Bad or Decaying Teeth
There may be a difficulty expressing our aggression. The collective problem, especially in western civilization, relates to being socially acceptable. This results in a deeply suppressed aggression lying beneath dental problems.
Our vitality or life force is reflected in our teeth. The saying to “never look a gift horse in the mouth” relates, to not just checking a horse’s age, but it’s vitality. Losing teeth can relate to a loss of energy.
According to Louise L. Hay, problems with the teeth relate to longstanding indecisiveness and an inability to break down ideas for analysis and decisions. This is especially true of root canal work.
The Spiritual Cause of Teeth Grinding & Gum Problems
- Teeth grinding can relate to not ‘getting a grip’ on something that is ‘hard to chew’. This can symbolically represent our inability to “snap at people” that has been a challenge during the day.
- The gums represent the foundation of our teeth and therefore there is an inability to back up decisions, reflecting a lack of positivity. By the same token, the gums represent our basis for confidence and self-assurance.
- Bleeding gums are a result of inflammation (anger and resentment) at putting up with unjustified conditions. One’s confidence and self-assurance, together with joy, can drain away when there are demands on our vitality.
- Swollen gums can be due to deep-seated grief over insufficient nurturing. As to receding gums, there is frustration and anger at how life is going.
- The incisors relate to being eroded by others. People wearing us down.
- Problems with wisdom teeth represent unresolved feelings of neglect and rejection as a child.
The Spiritual Cause of problems with Specific Teeth
- Upper teeth Problems with our own authority.
- Lower teeth Resisting responsibility and receiving.
- Right teeth Unresolved issues with the father.
- Left teeth Unresolved issues with the mother.
According to Dr Michell Caffin, an oral surgeon, he found that the different quadrants of the mouth related to certain feelings:
- Upper right teeth Difficulty finding a place in the outside world.
- Upper left teeth Difficulty in fulfilling the desire to be.
- Lower right Problems making a concrete plan
- Lower left Lack of emotional recognition within the family.
According to Louise L. Hay in her book, Heal Your Body, the probable cause was not giving yourself mental space to create a firm foundation.
By applying my own unique methods, I am able to get to the root cause of why you have gum or teeth problems and assist you on your road to better health and well-being.

Hi tony, great article. I’ve had the lower right back molars out recently after a week of abscess and antibiotics hoping to not have them out. The last molar had a root canal for over 20 years with infection at the bottom roots as the root canal didn’t get all the way down. Then the tooth next to it had a cavity that got infected. It’s been a long few weeks. The article says unresolved issues with father. That makes sense since my dad died when I was 27 during a second open heart surgery. Any other insights? I have a feeling it’s to do with the toxic masculinity from my grandfathers who died b4 I was born. Both were alcoholic workaholic abusers of woman and children. How can I move this through? Cord cutting and sage?
Hi Lee, we are unaware of how much we absorb our ancestor’s and subsequently our parent’s deep hidden feelings. Both your grandfather and father carried feelings of self-accusing and self-rejection, due to being made to feel “bad”, “wrong”, and, even “evil” for being who they were.
An aspect can then be “picked up” by the children. Start focusing on your positive qualities and dreams.
Hi Tony
I’ve just cracked my tooth – upper right – two teeth after the incisor. Never happened to me before and my colleague also did the same a few days ago. Definitely feel it has a deeper meaning.
Hi Sylvie, the meridians relating to those particular teeth are lung and large intestine. There may be chronic grief, sadness, overwhelm, controlling, feeling trapped and dogmatic.
Hi. I keep having oral thrush and swelled gums, bleeding sometimes. Im trying to understand my emotions and it scares me what I say isnt enough tofix the problem.
Hi Jennifer, you may have a great deal of resentment as a result of not being able to express yourself. You feel pushed and manipulated into circumstances that are causing you a great deal of despair. You are denying your own needs.
Thank you. Not resentment but im terrified. That last part is correct about being pushed causing me to despair.
Hi Jennifer, the resentment may be deeply hidden.
Warm wishes.
hello Tony, i have teeth decay/ cavity when i was 18 years. many fillings and i got 3 teeth for tooth canal treatment already,, in these years, my teeths decay is getting worse, some fillings fall out ….recently. 2 of my wisom teeths (left side_) & 2 molar recently get chipped, dentist just recommend root canal treatment due to infection…i am so worring,,,,sad ,dont know what to do….dun want to get root canal treatment….. i feel this maybe related to my pressure of study. i didnt do well, and i dun want to lose in the course., i am losed in direction. and not sure what to do next ….should i stop the course now or finish it… maybe low self esteem,,i feel that i have to put lots of effort to perform better…and i sometimes dun speak up for myself when communicating,,, Could you advise? how can i heal my infected teeth….and regrow it ?
As teeth relate to decision making and gums relate to support in making your decisions this certainly relates to where you are at the moment. Perhaps you were not allowed to make decisions as a child, as well as your confidence being undermined. These are areas that I work on. Your body is the messenger.
Hi Tony, my lower two front teeth and their neighbors have receding gums, which have darkened st the gum line. My teeth were always in great shape until the last couple of years as menopause set in. I had gum inflammation (that would come n go) that I attributed to having Rheumatoid Arthritis.
The current condition has me baffled as I do subscribe to our bodies trying to talk to us when we are unwell. I have felt “stuck” regarding stepping out to share my wisdom.
Any insight or direction is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hi Suzanne, as the lower teeth that you are referring to relate to the kidney and bladder meridians there is a feeling of fearful isolation, together with sexual insecurity and indecision. There may be a fear of imminent disaster. There may also be a lack of inner direction, feeling controlled, and feeling restless and impatient.
Thank you, Tony. Your reference to feelings of restlessness and impatience def resonates. What is your suggestion to address bladder and kidney meridians?
Hi Suzanne,
For the bladder meridian, see yourself full of peace and harmony and in control of your life.
For the kidney meridian, appreciate being alive and learning from your mistakes. See your sexual energies as balanced. Last but not least, be gentle on yourself.
Hi, I just found your page and am fascinated. I have had a lifetime of dental issues which have gone from cavities to root canals to infected root canals. I am not started to remove the root canals and am devastated. How can I resolve the underlying issues so to be at peace with my body going forward ? Also my son who just started college called to say he had a wisdom tooth (lower left) that is partially covered and is in a great deal of pain. His teeth are otherwise healthy and fine. Any suggestions? Thank you for your time and wisdom!
Hi Elise, your foundations and ways of doing things have been destroyed. As a result you have lost your grounding and your roots. Your son is not giving himself enough mental space to create a firm foundation.
Tony, lm so thankful a friend put me onto your page. Recently, l have experienced bottom right , 2nd molar tooth pain, maybe more the gum bc it has receded so much. Has an old amalgam filling, old root canal and crown. I believe as a child in school, dental van used my teeth to practice on bc l don’t recall having teeth issues growing up. I also had two bottom teeth removed bc dentist said too many teeth. Thankyou for your time and feedback.
Hi Lisa, the feeling behind the bottom right, 2nd molar is a self-sabotaging pattern due being belittled as a child. The root canal reflects a certain loss of direction.
Warm wishes
I have had ongoing issues with gum recession and some bone loss. My dentist has seen improvements in some areas but worsening on some including upper left side, although she struggling to determine what’s causing it. I was quiet anxious about not being able to feel what the underlying emotional causes are.
My gum/teeth issues trigger a lot of fear I would like to clear.
Hi Kate, you have difficulty in handling your instinctive, intuitive, and spontaneous reactions. There is also a problem coming to effective decisions, as well as being afraid to take assertive stands and actions. Your confidence and competence was undermined in your former years.
Hi my whole mouth is in flames. Bottom right side is aching to gj Ed point of madness. Right side of the jaw has balloned out and looks like someone has punched me. Teeth on upper side falling out 2 in 4 days. Big trouble
Hi Gloria. you have created a learned helplessness and difficulty in making decisions. This has been the result of a lack of nurturing, grounding and teaching in your former years. The result can be a resistance to taking responsibility. The swelling and pain reflects a seething emotional hurt and anger due to feeling restricted and over-worked.
I have severe wisdom tooth pain in my lower left side and it cannot be removed as its root is touching the nerve.
I feel stuck in many ways in life. I am 53 and am unable to make any decision about my future to be happy.
Is that the cause?
Hi Vidya, you are not giving yourself enough mental space to create a firm foundation. This was due a great deal of underlying grief and and fear over growing up with insufficient support. This left you with a fear of opening up to the expansion of life. You have a fear that if you do something dreadful would happen. It is a case of ” Feel the fear and do it anyway.”
Hi Tony….this is fascinating!ive had crooked, unhealthy teeth my whole life.My motherdrank alcohol and smoked while pregnant with me.I was born premature, lungs full of mucous…..as a result I have realized how extremely angry I am at her lack of love and support. In my 60’snow…lower teeth are a little loose anx currently gums are swollen and painful. Im salt water rinsing, oil pulling, rinsing with aloe vera and brushing eith charcoal toothpaste but the infection is still present.
I appreciate what you said–, I have had little to no support, particularly from my parents and was not allowed to speak up.
Thought I had made peace with ths…..any suggestions?
Thanks,Im in pain.
Sincerely,
Pamela H.
Hi Pamela, I can see you have had a tough journey. I can work with the emotional cause of the condition to ease some of the pressure you have experienced in life.
On a practical note, I have found hydrogen peroxide quite amazing as a mouthwash. Just google the dosage.
Warm wishes
Tony Mills
I have a lip ulcer bottom right side of my lip and aching in the bottom Front part of my teeth I feel overwhelmed with my responsibility’s as a single mom.
Hi Lena, I can see how overwhelmed you are by your responsibilities as a single mother. However, it is your deep unconscious feelings of resentment and judgment that are held back and festering that are being unexpressed. You may not have been allowed to talk back as a child.
Keep on repeating Louise Hay’s affirmation.” I create only joyful experiences in my loving world.”
Hi, I’ve got gum disease and receding gums. I’ve lost 3 teeth so far and now have 3 more moving and 1 literally hanging in there. I can’t get a dentist here in UK. I have few back teeth so eating and chewing is now a struggle. It’s the large molars at the back on both sides that I’m losing.
As the teeth relate to decision making, the gums represent supporting those decisions. You have a background of vulnerability due to a lack of nurturing. Warm wishes
This is so interesting, thank you 🙏 I seem to get pain in my partially grown wisdom tooth on my bottom left side when I express anger in not a positive way and I tend to loathe myself after for it. It comes up as that I have something stuck in my gum and therefore swells up. I’ve been to the dentist to have it cleaned and resolved many a time that they actually might remove it soon. Would it be bad to do this? I am a very indecisive person so can very much relate to Louise Hay’s message too. Thank you for reading this comment ! Charlotte
Hello Charlotte. You have been “digging your heels in” and not giving yourself the mental space to create a firm for yourself. There is a great deal of underlying grief and fear over growing up with insufficient support.
Just came across your blog, I am from Canada. So very grateful with this information. I just recently got a tooth ache in my upper left molar tooth. I know I don’t have a cavity as I’ve already been to the dentist a year ago and reversed it. This problem started happening when I reached out to my mother about getting my sisters contact information, I haven’t spoken with my sister in years. My family is very dysfunctional. She said she had to ask for my sisters permission before doing so and then reported back to me that she didn’t ask her because she’s going through stuff and now isn’t the time to put the pressure on her.
Hi Shaneen, you have difficulty in handling your instinctive, intuitive, and spontaneous reactions, as well as coming to effective decisions. You have problems with your own authority and power, as you are afraid to take assetive actions and stans. The reason could be a fear of abandonment and rejection.
Hello Tony, I appreciate your generosity in answering questions like this.. I’m not sure where to look for help since I have absolutely no trust in western medicine and not a lot of money to just try everyone and everything.. my 10 year old sons baby teeth that have already fallen out have all disintegrated. We eat as organically as possible and i do my best to feed them according to medical medium, Anthony Williams, advice but this is a bit of a concern since it seems all the men in my family have severe weakness of teeth. I am big time follower of Louise Hay and have shared her work with many as it has helped me become aware of so much of my own stuff and lead me to so much self healing, I am a massage therapist, so also work with people in the world of natural and self healing. If you have any advice on how I can lead my son towards his own healing I’d be so grateful.. I don’t expect you to work for free but again don’t have a lot and am ambitious enough to get things done on my own with minimal guidance, MUCH MUSH GRATITUDE FOR ALL THAT YOURE DOING HERE WITH ME ON THIS PLANET RIGHT NOW, SUCH A BEAUTIFUL BLESSING, THANK YOU 🥰🙏🤗💖
Hi Karli, I have answered by email. However if I can help in any other way, please let me know.
It’s an heartbreaking barrier in social expressions.. I find it difficult to even put up a cute smile .. its really killing me silent. Please help !!
Hi David, you can make an appointment on this website if you want assistance in addressing your challenges. Warm wishes.
Once the emotional root is dealt with, will the gum tissue and bone loss regenerate? Will the body repair its self?
Hi Erin, let’s put it like this: Once the root emotional cause of gum disease and teeth problems are addressed there is much more chance of the gums regenerating and teeth problems easing off.
I lost my three front teeth “Upper” as a child 7 years through trauma.. how can I make it come back . Since then I feel like something authoritative has been taken from me rill date.
Please help 🙏
Hello David,
The top front teeth represent a lack of groundedness and a fear of taking risks to learn. In the background, there may be a fearful isolation and even a fear of imminent disaster. Also sexual insecurity and indecision.
I appreciate your efforts on trying to explain to me, but i still don’t get it . Please can you go a bit more simpler and further . Thanks
Hi David,in what way are your teeth and/or gums affecting you?
I see you put up gums regenerate, this I believe is not true, maybe gums will get healthier in some way but if your saying you can regenerate gums then please count me in as I suffer badly
Hi Michaela, I cannot regenerate your gums. However, I could help you regenerate your own gums, as part of the emotional feelings behind gum disease is the lack of support.
I am going though some very disturbing issues with my gums and loss of teeth.I recognize I have a lot of anger and problem with boundaries.do not know how to resolve it other than going to the endodontist, dentist, oral surgeon. Thank you
Hi Claudia, the cause of your gum and teeth problems will continue while you carry so much unexpressed anger. To address the source of your anger without overreacting, even if the person has moved on, will help. Should you like my help to release the anger, you can book a zoom appointment via my appointments page of my website.
I hear u I am going through the exact same thing.
The last time I walked out of the dentists I ended up crying because every time I go he has to remove another tooth.
The bone loss is getting worse and worse.
Anyway after coming to the conclusion that my problem is too advanced for a normal dentist I started looking into other things and I discovered a laser treatment which is supposed to be brilliant for gum problems and can apparently help the bone to regrow and help receding gums aswell and stop people from losing more teeth aswell as other things.
I’m hoping to go for a consultation once I’ve got the finances.
I’ve being to a periodontist aswell who was able to help more than the normal Dentist.
After doing some research and wasting time with unproductive trips that only resulted losing more and more teeth I think one of the best options for people in our situation is to consider the laser gum treatment.
If u type laser gum treatment or something like that in the search engine you should see info about it and places that offer it
Thanks for sharing that Claudia. Additionally, it would be worth researching hydrogen peroxide and urine therapy as it has been proven to heal gums and much more. More info here. https://urotherapyresearch.com/urotherapy-webinar/?fbclid=IwAR3LJHZ1PXNy6558oCnMotpGtZBIUaC6STl-2Sx9ZJ8FpLmCLxQWdpyP9DU. Warm wishes.
Great info Thanku T
I desperately need help with this
Thyroid problems since birth and I’m 59 .
I try to express myself in a precise way s d I can’t seem to do it and I’m very smart
It’s like my frontal and my rear brain are disconnected
Hi Elizabeth, your throat chakra has probably been blocked due to suppressed self-expression and your crown chakra has been disrupted due to an early trauma. Should you like my help, we can meet over Zoom. https://energetic-wisdom.co.uk/appointments/ Warm wishes, Tony Mills.
Wow, I googled this. There is a book which I couldn’t remember the name that is similar to this idea. This is everything I am going through because of covid related trauma it has taken a toll on my mouth. Not being able to literally speak( masks). This is very interesting.
This is very true Amy. The throat and thyroid can also be affected due to suppressed communication.
Thank you for your excellent information. My teeth issues began with baby teeth and continued through my 80’s. I believed my issues have been unresolved for lifetimes. I have more clarity after reading your article❤️🙏❤️
Hi Shellie, I am glad I have given you some insight.Warm wishes.
I keep having problems with my lower left wisdom tooth. It partially grew in and keeps getting food stuck in it which the dentist helps remove. It’s happened again recently, I’m skeptical to get it removed because I feel that there is a deeper meaning to it. My mum thinks it’s stress, I feel it happens after I have an argument and actually express anger believe it or not! it is a very sore and throbbing feeling. I would love to know if it could just be food or something more. Thank you 🙏
Hi Charlotte. You have been “digging your heels in” by not giving yourself the mental space to create a firm foundation for yourself.
I can say personally I have noticed this is true about suppressing aggression and teeth/mouth/gum issues. In particular I noticed strong relief when watching Teal Swan’s video on ‘Parts Works’ – mainly in my right jaw area where an infection was present. Immediately after getting in touch with my ‘aggressive side’ that feels strong resentment towards women and embracing it lovingly, I felt a level of relief all over the right side of my face that I never knew was possible.
Most of us have no clue what to do with our aggression nor do we know where it comes from or how to resolve it. We assume that suppression is ‘healthy’ and ‘good’ since its good not to act on it – which is true to an extent. It’s good not to act on it, but constantly suppressing it isn’t the same as resolution which is far more beneficial to everyone.
Thank you for your wise words, Daniel. the body always speaks the truth. My purpose is to find that truth and work with it until the body no longer has to express it.
